
Lou Conter was 20 years old when the warship he was on, the USS Arizona, was bombed by Japanese forces at Pearl Harbor in 1941.
Now 101, he is the last known survivor of the USS Arizona since the death of Ken Potts in April at the age of 102. Conder avoided the burning debris and helped his teammates escape. Today he does not want to be called a hero.
“I consider heroes who gave their lives, who never returned to their homeland, to their families,” he said. “These are the real heroes.”
