Resident arrest incidents took place today in Kalamia-Kozani in protest against the construction of a photovoltaic park.
In particular, the residents of Kalamia, who had lined up in the area since early morning, when trying to block the equipment of a construction company working on the opening of the field, were confronted by strong police forces. One citizen was slightly injured and taken by an EKAV ambulance to the Kozani hospital, while four others were arrested and are currently being held at the Kozani police headquarters. Dozens of citizens gathered near the police building, demanding the release of their fellow villagers.
The photovoltaic park under construction in Kalamia-Kozani has a capacity of 45 MW and covers an area of 730 acres around a 180 degree perimeter and only 100 meters from the village. Residents who managed to temporarily stop work 15 days ago are protesting because, they say, “the conversion of pastures into fenced-off areas of photovoltaic panels will eliminate the remaining livestock activity, and on the other hand, the way the park creates conditions of suffocation in the lives of residents.”
