
The pair of Romanian Bernadette Shox and Sofia Polkanova (Austria) missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals of the women’s doubles singles at the World Table Tennis Championships in Durban, South Africa, after losing to the South African athlete on Thursday. Korea’s Jihee Jeong/Yubin Shin 3-0 (11-9, 15-13, 11-4).
A victory for the Romanian-Austrian pair would secure bronze medals.
This is Romania’s best result at the World Cup in Durban.
At the World Championship in Durban, Romania participated with seven players: Ovidiu Ionescu, Eduard Ionescu, Darius Movilianu, Bernadette Shox, Elizabeta Samara, Adina Diaconu and Andrea Dragoman.
The delegation was supplemented by trainers Viorel Filimon, Michaela Steff, Andrii Filimon, Ionuc Seni, physiotherapists Adrian Mirza, Petruc Gice, psychologist Mioara Shinkan and doctor Kostin Dumitru.
Romania’s last medal at the World Championships was won by Ovidiu Ionescu, the world vice-champion in men’s doubles, in Budapest 2019 together with Spain’s Alvaro Robles, Agerpres reports.
