Hungary’s parliament on Tuesday repealed a controversial section of a law aimed at LGBTQ+ people that allowed anonymous reporting of those who “question” the constitutional definition of marriage, family and gender, AFP reported.

Voted by parliament in April, this amendment to the 2014 text on whistleblowers expanded the list of areas in which citizens can file complaints.

Thus, in order to “protect the Hungarian way of life”, the amendment allows for the condemnation of “any doubts about marriage”, enshrined in the 2019 Constitution as a union between a man and a woman.

He also urged people to condemn people who deny “the right of children to have an identity that corresponds to their birth sex.”

Human rights groups have criticized the text as adding to the legal arsenal that incites hatred against sexual and gender minorities.

Hungarian President Katalin Novak rejected the text and sent the law to the parliament for revision, saying that “the vaguely worded provision does not effectively protect the values ​​set forth in the Constitution.”

Therefore, on Tuesday, the deputies approved the amended version.

Since 2018, Hungary has been gradually changing its legislation as part of the social project of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who wants to usher in a “new illiberal era”.

It banned gender research, registration of gender reassignment in official civil status records, and adoption by same-sex couples.

Under the law passed in 2021, it is also no longer possible to discuss gender reassignment or homosexuality with minors. The European Commission opened an infringement procedure supported by 15 EU countries.

Hungary is in the midst of negotiations with Brussels to unblock billions of euros in European funds frozen due to non-compliance with the rule of law.

Previously, this Central European country, a member of the EU since 2004, was one of the most liberal countries in the region. Homosexuality was decriminalized in the early 1960s, and same-sex civil unions were recognized in 1996.
