At the end of April, Netflix announced the moment from which it will no longer allow users to share passwords, reports The Mirror.

The decision comes after the streaming service tested in a few select markets a way to charge users who shared their data to log in to another family, and took technical measures to detect such sharing.

For example, in Spain, where the new measure was tested, Netflix lost more than a million users in Spain in the first three months of 2023, but the company says the drop is temporary until users get their own accounts.

What we know at the moment about the ban on the transmission of Netflix passwords in the world and in Romania

After months of testing the measure in several test markets, Netflix announced at the end of April that it will no longer allow users to share passwords, likely starting in July 2023.

However, the new rules will be implemented first in the US and then in other countries in the current quarter.

For Romania, it is not known from which date the new bans on password sharing will come into effect, but it is very likely that they will be implemented in our country starting this summer or, at the latest, from autumn.

It should be noted that Netflix currently limits the number of devices that can access your account at the same time, depending on the plan you choose. In Romania, the subscription, which allows viewing from any phone, tablet, computer or TV, costs 11.99 euros per month.

According to Netflix, more than 100 million people around the world use an account that they don’t pay for. The company did not present data broken down by country.

What will those who want to continue using Netflix under someone else’s password do / Countries where the ban is already in place

For those who want to continue using a Netflix account with a shared password, the streaming service will charge an additional fee.

In particular, if the person using the password does not live at the address registered on the account, then they will have to pay an additional subscription fee if they want to continue using a friend or relative’s account.

This surcharge has already been introduced, initially as a test, in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain.

Netflix members with Standard or Premium plans in many countries, including Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain, can add an additional sub-account for two people they don’t live with, each with a profile, personal recommendations, usernames and password an additional fee of CAD 7.99 per month per person in Canada, NZD 7.99 in New Zealand, €3.99 in Portugal and €5.99 in Spain.
