Kremlin confirmed today that Russia extended the Black Sea grain deal by two months after reaching some results in the talks that gave it “some hope”.“, but notes that more progress needs to be made in our own interests.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced the extension in a televised address on Wednesday, which was later confirmed by Russia, Ukraine and the UN.
During a video conference with reporters, Peskov said that various scenarios were being considered for easing restrictions on international payment transfers at the Russian state-owned Agricultural Bank, which is Moscow’s key demand in the negotiations.
“Regarding guarantees for Rosselkhozbank, various options have been explored that are tantamount to canceling its exclusion from the SWIFT payment system,” he said, noting that “there is some hope based on the negotiations that have taken place so far.”
However, the Kremlin spokesman pointed out that Moscow wants more progress in the next two months.
“It is very important to understand that the fate of the agreement is still in the hands of those with whom Mr. UN he must agree on the Russian part of the deal,” Peskov said.
“A certain section of the path has been passed – there are results, but not completely. We will try to finally resolve this issue within these 60 days.”
He added that negotiations on the export of ammonia from the Russian city to the Ukrainian port via a pipeline (the Togliatti-Odessa pipeline) are ongoing.
For its part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergey Lavrov, said today that Moscow agreed to extend the deal on Black Sea grain for two months, although it did not see results in the implementation of the part of the deal for Russia.
Speaking at a press conference with his Ugandan counterpart, Lavrov said the agreement aims to improve food security for the world’s poorest people.
Lavrov denied that Russia’s extension of the deal, partly mediated by Turkey, had anything to do with the Turkish presidential election.
