Hollywood legend Harrison Ford, who arrived in Cannes for the official premiere of the fifth film in the Indiana Jones series, was unexpectedly awarded the Palme d’Or for his entire career before the film’s screening.

“I am deeply touched by this award,” the 80-year-old American actor said without hiding his excitement after receiving the award from the festival’s CEO Thierry Fremaux.

When it was announced that the fifth sequel to the archeology professor’s adventure series, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, would be screened on the Croisette, organizers said they were preparing a “special honor” for Harrison Ford, with no other details.

Ford, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, has embodied many characters, from Han Solo in the Star Wars film series to Blade Runner in Ridley Scott’s cult film of the same name and archaeologist Dr. Seuss. Jones with a whip and a fedora, a role that has followed him since 1981, from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The new Indiana Jones movie will hit theaters at the end of June.

Last year, Tom Cruise traveled to Cannes to present the world premiere of Top Gun: Maverick and also unexpectedly won the Palme d’Or.

This year, the opening ceremony of the festival on Tuesday honored another big name in American cinema throughout his career, 78-year-old Michael Douglas.
