EFKA: insurance for thousands of self-employed is expiring

The deadline, which tens of thousands have, expires on May 31. freelancers, self-employed and farmers with debts to him EFKA to provide themselves and their family members with medical benefits.

The management of the organization has begun to expand the insurance capabilities of all unpaid workers until the end of May, regardless of the presence of debts to insurance funds. At the same time, the Ministry of Labor and the EFKA have opted for a decision to maintain the possibility of partial payment of contributions for 2023 in order to ensure the coverage of health benefits in kind. In particular, with the provision, which was adopted shortly before the closing of parliament for elections, provides for the possibility of paying an amount corresponding to the annual contributions for 2022 only in the health sector, the insurance class chosen by the insured person, in order to extend his insurance capacity until February 29, 2024 of the year. In other words, if a self-employed person pays an amount corresponding to the annual health care contribution for 2022 in aggregate, his insurance capacity will be extended until February 29, 2024, even if he has other insurance debts.

Until this happens, the directly insured person, as well as their family members who are indirectly insured by EFKA and EOPYY, will remain without health benefits, i.e. without free access to public health care.

Those who owe EFKA can pay part of the premiums until May 31 to continue to have health insurance.

It should be noted that at the time of the adoption of the relevant norm, high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Labor indicated that this was the last time such a thing was accepted, which means that after February 2024, in order to maintain their insurance capacity, the self-employed person will either have to have no debts, i.e. pay all contributions for both health and retirement (main, but also auxiliary or one-time, where applicable), or join some kind of agreement that he will serve.

And now comes the second important date, since July 31 is the deadline for re-joining the 72 or 120 payment agreement, as well as the 72 payment agreement for debts incurred between September 2021 and December 2022. As long as someone who meets the conditions he wants to be up to date with insurance and have health insurance after February next year, he must apply for inclusion before the end of July, otherwise (and provided that by then no new rules will be adopted), the only way out will be a fixed arrangement of 24 installments. As K found out, the application rates are low, as applications are not submitted even for 10% of the lost agreements.

Finally, it should be noted that until February 2024, in-kind health insurance capacity is still granted unconditionally to special groups of insured persons, such as the workers of the Scaramanga shipyards, the maintenance area of the Peram shipyards and the Elefsina shipyards. , racetrack riders, guides, unemployed freelancers without debt, businesses and employees who support businesses or carry out activities in municipalities affected by fires (e.g. Evia), as well as employees who have received for at least 2 months or 50 days during 2022 year, special compensation from the Ministry of Labor.
