American press billionaire Barry Diller warned that its use artificial intelligence would be disastrous for her journalismunless publishers can use copyright law to exercise control.
Speaking at the Sir Harry Evans World Summit on Investigative Reporting in London, Diller said it would be a mistake for artificial intelligence to allow free access to media content.
“You can’t have fair use when you have a machine that knows no boundaries,” said Diller, chairman of the IAC media group.
Media groups are concerned that their publications are being used by artificial intelligence as the basis for generating news.
Diller said on Wednesday he would work with News Corp and German publisher Axel Springer to protect journalism from the threat.
“We are leading a group that will say that we will change the copyright law, if necessary, we will work so that you cannot take our stuff, or we will sue. You have the right to control what you post,” he said.
Axel Springer CEO Matthias Deppner warned earlier this year that artificial intelligence poses big risks, but also big opportunities for the media. “Artificial intelligence could make independent journalism better than ever, or just replace it,” he said.
