Following an investigation by the police of the Komotini Security Directorate, two cases of telephone fraud against two women in the Rhodope regions were uncovered.
In particular, strangers called the woman and, pretending that her daughter was injured and in need of urgent surgery, demanded that she pay a sum of money, jewelry and pounds sterling for the operation. The attackers managed to trick the woman into collecting the pounds and money in an envelope and then putting it in a predetermined place in the city (a trash can), where one of them went and took it.
He was arrested by the police when a criminal organization and fraud case was brought against him. Four more people appear in the case file – accomplices of the detainee, who are on the wanted list.
As it was established, the attackers, using the same method, deceived another woman in the Rhodope village a few days ago, extorting a sum of money from her. The detainee was found to have pounds sterling and part of the amount, as well as two mobile phones. He will be taken to the District Attorney of Rodopi while the Komotini Security Department conducts a preliminary investigation.
In connection with the above cases, the police give useful advice to citizens so as not to be deceived. Specifically, he calls them:
– do not succumb to the easy persuasion of people who approach them as acquaintances of relatives-friends,
– be especially careful with unknown persons trying to enter their home under various pretexts and tricks,
– treat your personal belongings with care, in order to avoid the possibility of their export by hire,
– be especially careful when strangers try to convince them to pay a sum of money under the pretext of an urgent need for a relative or friend (for example, hospitalization),
– do not succumb to meeting invitations (appointments, etc.)
– in cases where strangers call for the emergency assistance of a known relative, they should always seek to contact their known relative by phone to confirm what they are calling on their phone,
– declare that they are not going to donate money if their acquaintances-relatives do not appear,
– not allow unknown persons to lead them to a credit shop or ATM to withdraw money,
– not be easily convinced of opportunistic purchases of products recommended to them by unknown persons,
– do not succumb to the persuasion of unauthorized persons, who present themselves as employees of the public service or other body, to eliminate a technical problem,
– not to be persuaded when strangers ask them for money for the debts of acquaintances or relatives in public utilities or in company stores for the purchase of goods that offer services,
– try to keep the characteristics of the criminals as well as the vehicles they drive and
– inform the police authorities even in the event of an attempted fraud.
