Republican congressman arrested George Santos on charges of federal crimes.
Specifically, George Santos faces seven counts of fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds and two counts of perjury to the House of Representatives.
Thanks to a campaign based in part on lies, George Santos was elected to Congress last fall.
He claimed to be a wealthy Wall Street broker with a sizable real estate portfolio and was considered a college volleyball star. He did not actually work for major financial firms, as he claimed, was not in college, and was in financial difficulty by the time he requested a public anointing.
Under the microscope of the authorities
In December, Long Island Attorney’s Office investigated New York congressman-elect George Santos.
Specifically because of his alleged Jewish ancestry, the Republican Jewish Coalition stated that Santos would not be welcome at the group’s future events after he misled members about his connection to their faith.
“He deceived us and misrepresented his legacy,” said Matt Brooks, the coalition’s chief executive. “In public comments and personally to us, he has stated in the past that he is Jewish.”
