Artificial intelligence made a film by reading the minds of mice

Swiss researchers have created a machine learning algorithm that can decode mouse brain signals and reproduces the images he sees.

The mice were shown a black-and-white still from a 1960s movie in which a man runs up to a car and opens its trunk. While the mice watched the clip, the scientists recorded their brain activity using two methods: electrodes in the visual cortex; and optical detectors for mice that have been genetically engineered to turn neurons in their brains green when they transmit information.

This data was then used for training. new machine learning algorithm called CEBRA. The algorithm can predict invisible movie frames directly from brain signals after an initial period of training and mapping.

In its current form, CEBRA also takes into account the activity of only about 1% of the neurons in the mouse brain, so there is certainly room for improvement in its accuracy and capabilities.
