Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto arrived in India today to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ Summit in Goa.
While there are no bilateral meetings scheduled between the Pakistani and Indian ministers, analysts believe the visit is likely to serve as an opportunity to break the ice and ease tensions between the two nuclear powers.
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif became the latest Pakistani leader to visit India in 2014 to attend the swearing-in ceremony of his colleague Narendra Modi.
Bhutto’s visit marks the first diplomatic contact since India’s 2019 airstrike in Pakistan against militants said to be fighting in the disputed region of Kashmir.
In response, the Pakistani Air Force shot down an Indian fighter jet that had violated Pakistani airspace and captured the pilot, who was released a few days later.
Pakistan has downgraded diplomatic relations, suspended bilateral trade and suspended cross-border transport after clashes between the two countries that fought three times over the Kashmir region.
