Director Oliver Stone spoke in an interview with The Guardian about his new documentary “Nuclear Now”, the American director also expressed his disappointment with Joe Biden and his support for Russian President Vladimir Putin, News.ro reports.

Oliver Stone’s new film Nuclear Now, which he narrates, argues that nuclear power is a necessary and obvious solution to climate change. Americans’ views on nuclear power fluctuate and have generally increased over the past decade, according to a recent Gallup poll that found 55 percent of Americans strongly or somewhat support the use of nuclear power as a way to provide electricity.

Stone says the purpose of his documentary is to communicate the magnitude of energy demand now and how much electricity will be needed in the future, as climate change mitigation strategies lead to the electrification of many processes and increased energy demand in countries such as India and China. .

Stone worked on “Nuclear Now” for about three years, although not only on this film. “Nuclear Now” is different from anything Stone has done because it is his first work “about an object, not a person”

“This film is a warning, a dramatic warning about the serious distortion of history and the need to go back to using nuclear power by any means possible,” Stone said.

The American director laments the decline of American cinema

Oliver Stone lives in Los Angeles and has three “Oscars”, but does not consider himself part of Hollywood. His sense of alienation seems to have intensified with this project. “The movie industry hasn’t been kind since Silkwood, China Syndrome, and all the horror movies of the ’50s,” he says, going on to reflect on how mainstream cinema has veered off course.

“I like the glow of old movies. You know, I want to see Elizabeth Taylor and I want to see Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe. I want to see the stars!”. This kind of cinema has become more difficult to make in a culture that is hard to digest on social media. “I respect reality, but I don’t necessarily want to see it. I like to see an emphasis on reality.”

At 76, Stone is four years younger than Joe Biden, who many believe is too old to run for a second term. Stone does not want to consider the age of the president and his eligibility for re-election. But he said what he thought of him.

“My favorite president was John F. Kennedy, so if you look at two Irishmen side by side, you’ll see that John F. Kennedy loves peace. And you find that Joe Biden is a cold warrior in the worst sense of the word.”

The last time The Guardian US profiled Stone, he had just finished a 4-hour documentary on Vladimir Putin (when he said “the Russian people have never been better”), announced back in 2014.

Have his feelings about the Russian leader changed in the particularly tumultuous years since then?

“I think Russia is doing a great job with nuclear energy,” he says after a moment’s thought.

“China is also a leader in this field, although I never managed to break into China, which was a shame for a film I would have liked to have. But Putin is a great leader for his country, and people love him.”
