HOUR UEFA has decided to end – at least temporarily – its support for sending elite and “A” foreign referees to the Greek League play-offs due to incidents of violence against foreign referees in recent matches. .
The President of the European Confederation speaks about this. Alexander Ceferin, in a letter he sent to EPO President Takis Baltakos. “For the time being, we must prioritize the safety of match officials, who must be kept away from such hostile and dangerous situations,” emphasizes Mr. Čeferin.
Details of the letter published by the EPO:
“Dear President, dear Panagiotis,
In continuation of our recent correspondence, I must inform you that it is with deep sadness and deep concern that UEFA has been informed of yet another incident of abusive and violent behavior towards football referees who have been assigned to officiate recent matches in the Greek league.
Despite our joint efforts, and in light of recent events, UEFA has reconsidered its support for sending elite and A category referees to officiate the Greek Super League 1 play-offs and has decided to discontinue this practice for the time being.
These incidents are outside the scope of football and we are sincerely grateful for your concern on this matter and for all the ongoing efforts of the Hellenic Football Federation and the Greek government to prevent such things from happening. However, for the time being, we must prioritize the safety of match officials, who must be kept away from such hostile and dangerous situations.
Yours sincerely”.
