Armenia-Azerbaijan: New round of peace talks in Washington

OUR Armenia And Azerbaijan hold a new round of negotiations in Washington tomorrow Sunday in an attempt to normalize their relations, a representative of the Armenian Foreign Ministry said today.

Tension between the two countries is rising again over the disputed region Nagorno-Karabakh, where Russian peacekeeping forces were deployed in 2020 to end the war – the second between the two countries over the enclave since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

This mountainous region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but is populated mainly by Armenians.

“Since April 30, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has been on a working visit to Washington. A new round of negotiations on an agreement on the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan is planned,” press secretary Ani Badalyan wrote on her official Facebook page.

There was no official confirmation of the meeting from Azerbaijan.

Despite years of attempts, Armenia and Azerbaijan have not reached a peace agreement that would resolve such issues as the demarcation of the border and the return of prisoners.

Last Sunday, Azerbaijan installed a new checkpoint on the road to Karabakh, the Lachin Corridor, a move that Armenia called a flagrant violation of the 2020 ceasefire.
