Two people arrested on charges of involvement in the murder of journalist George Karaivaz two years ago near his home appeared before the investigator, who issued a warrant for their arrest.
Two brothers who charged with felony murder in the second degree shortly before 12 noon, they were taken to the courts of Evelpidon under the strictest security measures and taken to the investigation department.
Those charged with the organized murder of the journalist asked and were given Wednesday a deadline to apologize to the bailiff.
Evidence that “pointed” to the two arrested
After a comprehensive analysis of the materials collected during the police investigation, it was found that the perpetrators used at least one motorcycle (scooter), as well as a van-type truck, to drive up and escape the crime scene.
As it turned out, those involved in the murder of the journalist “visited” the crime scene the day before they committed suicide.
At the same time, the investigation showed that the van belonged to the company for which the 48-year-old detainee was responsible, and as a result of the subsequent financial check, it was found that the presence of the vehicle on the site during the disputed periods of time was not justified.
During the preliminary investigation, which focused on additional comparison of evidence and personal interrogation, the participation of 40-year-old and 48-year-old men in the murder was revealed.
Statements by the Director of the Security Directorate of Attica, Brigadier General Ioannis Skouras:
We have called you today to present you the results of the investigation of the Attica Security Authority, in particular the Department of Crimes Against Life and Liberty of the Person, which resulted in the arrest of two citizens accused of involvement in the murder of journalist Giorgos Karaivaz, committed at noon on April 9, 2021 of the year.
We are talking about a 40-year-old and a 48-year-old relative who were arrested yesterday, Friday, April 28, 2023, on the basis of their respective arrest warrants.
In addition, the investigation established that a 40-year-old man was also involved in the murder of a citizen committed on December 6, 2021 in Galatsi, for which he was arrested on a different arrest warrant.
As our minister, Mr. Theodorikakos, has repeatedly emphasized, we are never going to leave unsolved any criminal act, let alone murder, and this, of course, applies even more so to the murder of a journalist. That is why we have made this case an absolute priority, and I want to note that we have had absolute and constant support from the Minister and the Chief of the Greek Police.
In this regard, the created special task force included experienced officers and non-commissioned officers who were engaged in the collection of data and information, as well as the processing of pre-investigation and information data.
I should note that throughout the entire preliminary investigation, we were assisted by specialist investigators from the Operational and Analytical Department, who managed to sort and process a large amount of collected digital data, as well as the CID Digital Evidence Analysis Department, thanks to the know-how that it possesses, ensuring safe and useful conclusions.
The result of a methodical and thorough investigation was to demonstrate key findings regarding the means used by the perpetrators, and related mainly to the planning and execution of the act, as well as their unhindered escape from the scene of the crime.
Further analysis of the obtained data on the route followed by the perpetrators both in approaching and escaping, combined with evidence of other murders characterized as “contracted” and organized crime related, led to the identification and identification of the perpetrator. two citizens, both of whom had previously applied to the authorities.
For my part, I would like to thank the colleagues who handled this case for the professionalism and dedication they have shown throughout the investigation, which of course continues to identify the remaining perpetrators.
More information will be analyzed by the spokesman of the Greek Police, Police Officer II Constance Dimoglidu.”
As previously mentioned by the director of the Attica Security Directorate of the Crimes Against Life and Personal Liberty Division, yesterday afternoon, Friday, April 28, 2023, two citizens aged 40 and 48 were arrested on the basis of their respective arrest warrants for participating in murder of journalist Giorgos Karaivaz.
In addition, a 40-year-old man was arrested on the basis of a second arrest warrant related to another case of the murder of a citizen, which was committed on December 6, 2021 in the Galatsi district, Attica.
At this point, and in continuation of what Mr. Governor pointed out, I would like to inform you about the history of the murder case of journalist Giorgos Karaivaz.
As you already know, at noon on April 9, 2021, in the Alimos district, an unknown assailant with obscured facial features approached the journalist on foot and fired several shots at him.
As a result, the journalist was mortally wounded, and the offender got on a two-wheeled motorcycle driven by his accomplice and fled in an unknown direction.
The aforementioned service, with the assistance of the Information Management and Analysis Department and the Criminal Investigation Department, conducted a thorough and comprehensive investigation, as a result of which important information and pre-investigation data were collected.
In particular, on the basis of a comprehensive analysis of the materials collected, it was established that the criminals used at least one SCOOTER-type motorcycle, as well as a van-type truck, to approach and escape from the crime scene. It is noteworthy that the movement of these vehicles was recorded in the same area and at the same time, on the eve of the murder.
Subsequently, further data collection was carried out on the van-type truck in order to clarify the status of its ownership and to establish the reason for its movement in the area. The vehicle was therefore found to be owned by a company run by a 48-year-old man, and a subsequent financial review found that there was no justification for the vehicle to be on site at the time in question.
As a result of the subsequent pre-investigation process, which focused on additional cross-examination of evidence and personal examination, the participation of 40-year-old and 48-year-old men in the murder was revealed.
These are people who have harassed the authorities in the past, while a 40-year-old man in particular was found to be involved in another murder committed by the Department of Crimes Against Life and Property as a result of an investigation. in Galatsi on December 6, 2021.
In this context, all pre-investigation evidence collected in both cases was transferred to the competent prosecutor’s office, after which the relevant arrest warrants were issued.
With reference to the criminal past of those arrested, it was established that:
were arrested on the basis of their respective arrest warrants on charges of robbery with an accomplice and violation of weapons laws in connection with a robbery case they committed in 2012 in the Attica region, while, in addition,
The 40-year-old man was charged with attempted murder, simple bodily harm, threats, defamation, false accusation and violation of domestic violence laws.
The arrested are brought to the competent bodies of the prosecutor’s office, and investigative actions to identify and detain other criminals continue.
Thank you.”
