WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been declared an honorary member of the ESIEA and is expected to receive a press credential.
It is noted that ESIEA is participating in the support campaign for Julian Assange, organized by the Italian Federation of Journalists (FNSI) with the support of the European and International Federation of Journalists (EFJ/IFJ).
The idea is that as many European unions and associations of journalists as possible give Julian Assange an honorary journalistic name, so that the following joint statement is presented at a support event organized today in Rome by the Italian Federation of Journalists:
“Release Julian Assange, an honorary member of our association.
We, the undersigned representatives of the European Unions and journalists’ associations, join the ILO in calling on the US government to drop all charges against Julian Assange and allow him to return home to his wife and children. We are deeply concerned about the implications of Assange’s continued detention on freedom of the media and the rights of all journalists worldwide, and we call on European governments to actively work towards the release of Julian Assange. To demonstrate our solidarity, we symbolically declare Julian Assange an honorary member of our associations.”
