Bulgaria introduces military training for high school students

The interim government of Bulgaria on Wednesday approved a decree on military training courses for students in the ninth and tenth grades, corresponding to the 3rd gymnasium and the 1st lyceum of Greece.

The order is based on amendments to the Law on the Reserve of the Armed Forces approved in 2020.

The government said in a statement that the decree regulates the education of ninth and tenth grade students, as well as the training of military and civil servants to conduct student education.

Training should begin in the next academic year, which will begin in September 2023. It will consist of five teaching hours per year using teaching time.

Students will be theoretically prepared in the field of homeland defense, civil-military relations, assistance to the population by the armed forces in military crises, history, tasks and duties of the armed forces.

The Bulgarian Ministry of Defense has stated that military training will not lead to the recruitment of students into the armed forces.

He added that the training will not lead to military qualifications or special skills in the handling of weapons, ammunition and explosives.
