Brazil: Lula again spoke out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Tuesday, stressing that no one talks about peace in a “senseless war.”

Speaking during a visit to Spain, Lula said he was keen to find a peaceful formula for ending the conflict. “I understand the European point of view on this war. It is unacceptable for one country to invade another, but this is a war in which I don’t see anyone talking about peace,” he said in his speech at a business conference.

Lula angered many in the West this month when he called on U.S. and European allies to stop arms supplies to Ukraine, prompting a White House official to accuse him of “repeating Russian and Chinese propaganda.”

After the backlash, the Brazilian leader softened his comments and, during a visit to Portugal and Spain, condemned Russia’s violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

In Spain, Lula again called for peace efforts “so that Ukraine can keep its territory.” A few days ago, he asked Ukraine to make concessions in order to end the war and return the newly occupied territories to Russia, while retaining Crimea.

The President of Brazil recently proposed the creation of a group of states that would work to restore peace in Ukraine.
