NASA launches tiny satellites to track storms

Two tiny CubeSats to monitor storms to be launched NASA next Sunday from New Zealand.

The TROPICS mission includes a total of four identical satellites designed to monitor tropical cyclones from low orbit and record data more frequently than existing meteorological satellites.

The second launch is scheduled for May 15. All four satellites will be launched on Rocket Lab Electron rockets.

The purpose of the mission is to study tropical cyclones to better understand the processes that cause rapid changes in storm structure.

TROPICS satellites will make hourly observations of precipitation, temperature and humidity during the storm. Modern satellites make observations every six hours.

More frequent data collection can lead to better weather prediction models.
