Union members of the National Statistics Institute went on strike in Japan on Wednesday, protesting what they called “pay discrimination” and demanding the unification of salary scales at headquarters and regional statistics offices. INS employees, represented by the union, are demanding that INS management take responsibility for the failure to deal with the problems that have arisen in recent years.

The Japanese strike will take place simultaneously in Bucharest and in 26 territorial statistics offices.

“As a result of the discriminatory pay situation in which the employees of the National Institute of Statistics (INS) were for a long time, who were treated as a lower category of civil servants, and as a result of the complete indifference of the decision-makers to numerous reports, appeals and protest actions, we ask:

  • Application of the Memorandum adopted by the Government of Romania on 13.07.2022 on the topic “Solution of existing problems with wages at the level of the National Institute of Statistics and regional and county statistics offices”;
  • termination of discrimination in pay, to which employees of the National Institute of Statistics from the central apparatus and territorial statistical offices are exposed;
  • standardization of the tariff grid from the central apparatus and from the territorial statistical offices.

According to the established protest calendar, INS employees will picket on 11/05/2023 the headquarters of the Parliament of Romania, starting at 10:00, and the headquarters of the National Institute of Statistics in Bucharest, starting at 11:45, – said the message, which arrived on Tuesday in the editorial office of the state
