Russia: Bolshoi Theater Cancels ‘Nureyev’ Ballet Due to ‘LGBTQ Propaganda’

Address of the State Academic Grand Theatre removed the ballet from the theater repertoire “Nureyev”director Kirill Serebrennikov, in connection with the law on “LGBTQ propaganda”.

This was reported by the Interfax agency with reference to the general director of the Bolshoi Theater Vladimir Urin.

“The work “Nureyev” was removed from the repertoire in connection with the signed law (…), which with absolute clarity defines issues related to the promotion of non-traditional values. (…) Of course, as soon as the law was signed, the theater decided to remove this production from the repertoire, ”said Urin.

The description of the ballet is still posted on the website of the Bolshoi Theatre. Several hundred dancers from all the creative teams of the theater took part in the production, the description says.

The ballet “Nureyev” is dedicated to the famous Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev. The premiere took place on December 17, 2017. In mid-March, the Bolshoi Theater canceled performances of the ballet “A Hero of Our Time” directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, which were supposed to take place on May 5, 6 and 7.

The theater management did not specify the reasons for the cancellation.
