Alexis Tsipras from Lavrion spoke about the complaints against Alexis Georgoulis and his expulsion from the party.
“Until yesterday, the MEP for SYRIZA, Alexis Georgoulis, is accused of something very important. Everyone can be judged by Justice. (…) There is no “yes but” for us in matters of gender-based violence, in matters of violence against women. No tolerance, no hiding, no matter how high one stands. Teach children to behave properly,” said, in particular, the President of SYRIZA-P.S.
Earlier, spokesman for the official opposition party Popi Tsapanidou, in an interview with the Meg TV channel, said that “Mr. Georgoulis, in addition to the explanations that he must give to the court, must also give explanations to the people. who vote. Yesterday we requested his headquarters. He hasn’t answered yet.”
Chronopoulou’s first statement in the Georgoulis case
On Tuesday afternoon, Eleni Chronopoulou, PASOK Political Council Member, Legal Adviser to the European Commission, made her first public statement on the Georgoulis case.
“Three years ago, at the beginning of 2020, I filed a complaint against a certain Greek MEP for crimes of rape and bodily harm,” she notes in a social media post.
“I knew from the first moment that this process could be painful for me, my family, my loved ones, as, unfortunately, it often happens with victims of such behavior. But I did it thinking that I owe it to myself and to every woman who might be in a similar position.
My complaint was filed the day after the incident with the provision of the necessary information (forensic reports, etc.), and 4 months later, in May 2020, I was ready to give the name of the abuser to the Belgian authorities, who are the only ones responsible for case management.
During these 3 years, I deliberately decided to deal with this issue only with my lawyers, without informing anyone, even my family, whom I tried to protect in every way. The publicity of the event at this particular time was made after the official request of the Belgian authorities to lift the immunity of the MEP after a thorough study of the case.
Yesterday’s leak of my name appears to have been done without my consent and is in itself a very serious breach of my privacy as well as the criminal process. It is sad that some who pose as human rights activists, on the altar of political administration, put me at the epicenter of vulgar and infuriating attacks.
I am in politics to fight for my ideas and principles through PASOK-KINALA, and I do not want any of my public presence to be determined by this unpleasant incident for me.
The time has come for the feeling of shame and guilt to fall not on the victims, but on the perpetrators of such incidents and those who endure them.”
Procedure for Waiver of Immunity
In accordance with the Rules of Procedure of Parliament (Article 6 and Article 9), the request to lift the immunity of a Member of the European Parliament is announced by the President of the European Parliament. at the plenary meeting and then submitted to the Legal Affairs Committee (LEC).
This happened yesterday, when the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said that she had received “a request from the competent Belgian authorities to lift the parliamentary immunity of Alexis Georgoulis.” The request is submitted to the Legal Commission of the Parliament in accordance with the established procedure.
Before making a recommendation to the whole Parliament to approve or reject the request, the Commission may request any information it deems necessary from the Public Prosecutor of Brussels.
According to the information, during the hearing in the relevant committee, the entire indictment will be heard for the first time, and the relevant MEP will have the opportunity to respond.
