Gaps in island health before Easter

With a great shortage of staff who staff them health units going to greet his guests Easter this year a lot of Aegean islands. It is significant that there is no pathologist in the hospitals of Santorini and Kos, as well as in the Tinos Health Center, and in the Andros, Milos, Paros and Ios Health Centers there is no microbiologist.

In particular, according to the data collected by the Panhellenic Federation of Workers in public hospitals, the Santorini hospital was left without an anesthesiologist, as the only 72-year-old (!) until recently retired. The hospital does not have a pathologist, and the general practitioner covers the corresponding needs, and just yesterday two cardiologists appeared (already a year without a doctor in this specialty). At the Health Center in Tinos, pathological cases are examined by a pediatrician, because there is no pathologist. Syros Hospital (a specialty hospital in the Cyclades) has only one cardiologist in the cardiology clinic, assisted by two cardiologists who work in the intensive care unit, and none in the TEP, where four doctors are scheduled.

There is no neurologist and psychiatrist, and the only pathologist is leaving in May, which means that if he is not replaced, then there will be no biopsy doctor. And the hospital on Kos was left without a doctor – two were transferred to cover the need. The hospital also lacks pediatricians and radiologists (from one specialist in these specialties). Despite constant announcements, doctors are not interested in staffing the hospital. Amorgos Health Center has only one cardiologist.

Medical centers in Santorini, Kos, Tinos and Syros are experiencing a significant shortage of critical specialists.

Specialty… role

General Hospital – Lemnos Medical Center has a doctor of all specialties. The anesthesiologist is on sick leave, the vacancy is filled by transfers of anesthesiologists from other regions of the country. The statement of a group of doctors from the Metopo hospital is also indicative: “The other day in Lemnos, the anesthetist was in the role. There was a whole earthquake with EKEPI and EKAB, but another doctor played the anesthesiologist, because there was no anesthesiologist.
