Lekkas for banning access to shipwreck: ‘An accident would be a disaster’

Professor and President of the OASP spoke about the apparent danger due to landslides on the famous Navagio beach in Zakynthos, Efthymyos Lekkasfollowing the decision to ban visitors from what is undoubtedly one of the most famous beaches in Greece.

The decision was made taking into account the safety of tourists and will be valid until the end of October, while severe penalties are also provided for those who ignore the prohibitive measures.

The professor and president of the OASP stressed that the danger is clear.

“We have successive landslides. These landslides are part of the natural processes that develop during a shipwreck and the landslide material is fed by the most beautiful beach almost in Greece, which actually processes the wave and gives all these pebbles and that very clear water. We made an attempt to zone the crash site, which we did. They did not work because there was no guard, but there were new large landslides,” he said.

“We are in the process of seeing how the wreck will be used by professionals and tourists. We are having a fruitful discussion with the people of Zakynthos, as well as with the deputies, the governor of the region and the relevant ministries. I believe that a very good solution will be found for everyone, so that, on the one hand, there is no financial burden and impact on the inhabitants of Zakynthos, and on the other hand, there is also the necessary safety of tourists. Because you understand that if some kind of accident happens, it will be a catastrophe for a very long time for the entire region,” he concluded.
