
Before the pandemic, in 2018, more than 71 million cars were produced in the world. With the 2020 pandemic, the global automotive sector faced a series of disruptions, the effects of which are still being felt today. We have seen, on the one hand, production lines halted due to lockdowns, after which the sector could not cope with the recovery in demand as the global automotive semiconductor crisis emerged.

To produce 60 million cars, approximately 9 million people are directly employed in the production of vehicles and the parts that go into them. This is a workforce that accounts for more than 5% of the world’s total manufacturing employment.

In 2021, Romania ranks 7th among 16 car-producing countries in the European Union, having produced more than 420,000 cars. Compared to production in Germany, the heavyweight of the European automobile industry, our country produced one-seventh of what came out of German car factories. This is not at all small if we also take into account the relative production capacity of the two countries or the size of the automotive industry in each of them.
