Why Germany Is Not Attractive for Foreign Workers
Germany is becoming less attractive for top foreign talent, according to a new Bertelsmann/OECD study that will worry the government of Olaf Scholz, who is trying to get more skilled foreign workers to fill the gaps in the job market.
The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) “Talent Attractiveness Indicators” released on Thursday, shows that Germany has dropped from 12th place in 2019 to 15th this year among the 38 OECD countries. The analysis is based on seven “dimensions” that foreign talent values: quality of opportunities, income and taxes, future prospects, home environment, skills environment, inclusion and quality of life.
The study isolated four groups of people that governments hope to attract – highly educated experts, entrepreneurs, startup founders and international students – and found that in only one of those groups, students, did Germany rank in the top 10. The top four countries were New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland and Australia, with the UK and US in 7th and 8th place.
