Two years after their breakup Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalteone of the two members of the French electronic music duo, explained the reasons for his decision.
Speaking recently in an interview with the BBC, the musician and co-founder of the band with Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo revealed that he wanted to distance himself from the sound that is the result of technology.
“Daft Punk was a project that blurred the lines between reality and fantasy with these robot characters. It was very important for Guy-Manuel and me not to spoil the story.” He added: “I love technology as a tool, but I’m a little intimidated by the nature of the relationship between machines and us. Now that the story is complete, I thought it would be interesting to uncover some of the creative processes that are based on people rather than algorithms.”
According to Bangalte, part of the reason for the remoteness of each genre of electronic music has been due to the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and its growing influence on creative output.
“My concerns about the advent of artificial intelligence go beyond its use in music production,” he said, explaining that some fans would misunderstand the duo’s intentions. “With Daft Punk, we tried to use these machines to express something very emotional, something that a machine can’t feel, but a human can. As much as I love this character, the last thing I want in the world we live in in 2023 is a robot.”
Bangalte and de Homem-Christo have decided to disband Daft Punk in 2021, a band that has been active in the music scene for 28 years.
Shortly thereafter, Bangalte announced the release of his first solo album entitled “Mythologies”, originally conceived as a ballet score, which premiered last July at the Grand Theater of Bordeaux.
