Portuguese parliament today once again adopted a law in favor of the decriminalization of euthanasiawhich was recast after it was withdrawn by the Constitutional Court and will now be judged by conservative President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
The bill, which has hitherto met with reservations from the president and the Constitutional Court, was approved by parliament for the fourth time in three years thanks to the votes of the socialist majority.
The bill will be presented to the head of state, a staunch Catholic and former law professor. Souza will be able to either publish it, or return it to the Constitutional Court to check its conformity with the country’s constitution, or use his veto, as he has done in the past.
