“The Mitsis Hotels Group has announced a €36 million investment program to rebuild, refurbish and modernize the Schliemann-Mella Palace hotel into a luxury 5-star hotel and create at least 150 new jobs.

The Group participated in an open tender announced by the Electronic National Social Security Agency (e-EFKA) to select a contractor for the rental of property at 46 Panepistimiou Street and 1 Harilaou Trikoupi Street in Athens and was selected as the tender. contractor.

On January 17, 2023, a real estate lease agreement was concluded for a period of 35 years with the right to extend for another 10 years.

The building was built in the 1880s – 1890s and belongs to the complex of four houses erected by Errikos Schliemann on Panepistimi Street. It was designed by Ernst Ziller and includes a mezzanine basement floor and four floors above the basement floor, with a total area of ​​7,115.62 sq.m., as well as an unconstructed additional building in an open area. like the Schliemann-Mell Palace, which houses the IDEAL cinema, 829.50 sq.

The Mitsis Hotels Group will use the building with respect for its history and neighboring monuments such as the Conservatory. In consultation with the competent authorities and institutions, he will propose solutions, especially to the Ministry of Culture, to eliminate any spatial and aesthetic oppression of the neoclassical neighboring buildings in order to highlight as well as protect the monumental environment in which the building is located.

At the same time, the use of the cinema, theater and convention center will be expanded, which will allocate space, improve its use and increase its attendance. Transferring management of the cinema to an international entertainment company will improve both its aesthetics and infrastructure, as well as its visibility.

For this reason, upon receipt of the building and as soon as the work is allowed to proceed and the necessary building permits are issued, which are currently suspended by the decision of the Ministry of the Environment, the group will immediately take the necessary actions to ensure safety. the public.
