He wants to make them more easily repairable. digital devices Europe, introducing the so-called “right to repair”. OUR European Commission approved a new proposal for its promotion goods repairwhich will lead to to save money for consumers, but also in waste reduction. The Commission’s proposal must be approved by the European Parliament and the Council.

For products under warranty, sellers will be required to offer repair, unless it is more expensive than replacement. In recent decades, priority has often been given to replacement instead of repair when products are damaged, and the incentives provided to consumers to repair their products after the statutory warranty has expired are insufficient. The proposal will make repairs easier and more cost-effective for consumers, as opposed to replacing the product. It will also ensure that more products are repaired under a statutory warranty and provide consumers with easier and cheaper options for repairing technically repairable products after a statutory warranty expires or when a product stops functioning due to wear and tear.

The proposal introduces a new “right to repair” for consumers both within and outside of the statutory warranty.

In addition to the legal guarantee, consumers will receive a new set of rights and tools that make repairs simple and affordable:

The goal is to save money for consumers and also reduce waste.

– The right of consumers to require manufacturers to repair products that are technically repairable under EU law, such as washing machines or televisions. This ensures that consumers always know who to contact when choosing to repair their products, while at the same time encouraging manufacturers to develop more sustainable business models.

– The obligation of manufacturers to inform consumers about products that they are obliged to repair themselves.

– An online repair finder platform that connects consumers with repairers and refurbished sellers in their area. The platform will allow searches by location and quality standards, helping consumers find attractive deals and increasing the visibility of repair shops.

– A European form of repair information that consumers can request from any repairer that will provide transparency on repair terms and prices and will make it easier for consumers to compare repair offers. This “easy repair” standard will be open to all repairers in the EU. who want to adhere to minimum quality standards, for example, depending on the duration or availability of products.

A recent Eurobarometer showed that 77% of Europeans feel personally responsible for taking action to limit climate change. Often discarded products are viable goods that can be repaired, but they end up prematurely in the trash, resulting in 35 million tons of waste, 30 million tons of resources and 261 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions every year in the EU. Also the cost to consumers due to choosing replacement over repair is estimated at almost 12 billion euros per year. In addition, the initiative is expected to generate $4.8 billion in development and investment in the EU.
