Elections: at a critical crossroads

Finally, elections! After a long period of informality pre-election period, the country now somewhat officially enters the electoral waters. As in every elections, so even now we will hear the famous that these are the most important elections of the post-colonial era. The truth is that it is not.

Due to our membership in the European Union and the euro, the results of the vote do not affect developments in some sectors. In general, nothing significant will change, no matter which government appears in the polls. After all, whether one likes it or not, the main political directions are formed not in Athens, but in Brussels.

On foreign policy issues, he said. The policy of the country is characterized by continuity, and despite the extreme populist phenomena that we have seen in the past, as, for example, in the case of the reaction to the Prespa agreement in 2019, those of us who had the sobriety to realize this, to the horror of the hot and stupid, N.D. in 2019, he performed a spectacular backflip. It is possible that some conservative voters, especially in Northern Greece, feeling cheated, will show their dissatisfaction about this in the May 21 elections, but in politics, as you know, you can’t fool many forever.

In matters of the economy, the general guidelines will remain the same, whatever the election results. After all, a financial stability pact and a country’s debt obligations allow for only minor differences between the economic policies of governments. On the most important issues at the moment, such as energy, inflation, banking issues, decisions are made mainly in the European context and little depend on the Greek political reality.

What will we vote for then? Only for the political wrapping of the country? Against! Today we are at a critical crossroads in terms of the rule of law, the quality of liberal democracy, corruption, freedom of information. It doesn’t go any further! These elections should become a new page in these matters. We cannot continue as before.
