Elections – Government: background of the decision

There were two key dates that have been circulating for a long time in Maximos Palace for elections: 21 and 28 May. Offers for these two dates have been strong in all recent meetings in Maximos. Yes, according to “K”the latter, which took place with the aim of election day, took place on Saturday under Kyriakos Mitsotakis. His few associates were under the impression that May 28 was an open option, as the prime minister listened more than he spoke. And as it turned out, the choice of date was purely his personal decision.

The decision to hold elections on 21 May was taken for two main reasons: Firstly, July 10-11 in Vilnius (Lithuania) will host a summit of NATO leaders, and the country should be represented by an elected prime minister. If elections were held on May 28 and re-elections on July 9 without achieving independence, then in Greece we would have a pre-order process and the country would be left without representation at this important summit. On the contrary, with elections on May 21 and a runoff on July 2, even if self-sufficiency is not achieved, there is time for a pre-order process to form a government. OUR The second reason On May 21, it was decided that the Panhellenic examinations would begin on June 2. The government wants to keep them as the apple of its eye and stay as far away as possible, because if they were held on May 28, the preliminary meetings to form a government would fall under the pan-Greek elections. What the Prime Minister did not want. It is worth noting that with the possible announcement of a second election, the acting minister will also have to take over the education portfolio.

Why Mr. Mitsotakis rejected proposals for elections on May 28 and decided to announce the time of elections for the cabinet.

Contacts with PtD and PtB

With regard to the briefing of the President of the Republic, which is usually held before the announcement of elections, this was done by telephone. Ms Sakellaropoulou is on an official trip to Serbia and the Prime Minister informed her of his intention to hold elections on 21 May. According to the information, tet-tet will take place during the Easter holidays, after which the dissolution of parliament will follow. He will then speak formally with the Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Tasula, with whom, according to information, he already had an informal contact, during which he briefed him. According to the same information, the decision to announce the date of the cabinet elections was also personal, sending a signal that the work is continuing to the end. The prime minister did not want to announce the election time with a televised address, as there have been many moments in four years when Mr. Mitsotakis addressed the Greek people with a speech about unpleasant events such as the lockdown, the wiretapping case in August and, most recently, accident in Tempe. Therefore, he wanted the election date announcement to be more “discharged” and part of the current political situation, such as the cabinet.
