Unrest in Paphos was caused by the placement of the Turkish flag on the central square of the city in connection with the World Cycling Race, which starts on Friday and ends on Sunday, April 2.
According to a statement from the municipality of Paphos, at the request of the organisers, a representative of the municipality organized the display of the flags of the 39 countries from which the athletes came, including the flag of Turkey.
A few minutes after the Turkish flag was placed, there was a reaction and a representative of the municipality contacted the Cyprus Sports Organisation. The answer he received was that the flag should remain in place because, accordingly, the Cypriot flag is flown in Turkey when Cypriot athletes compete.
