At least seven people have died in a landslide in Alausi, central Ecuador, and the number of missing people has risen to 64, the country’s emergency management said on Monday. Previously, 46 people were listed as missing.
“Seven people were killed, 23 injured, 64 missing,” the government tweeted.
President Guillermo Lasso visited the disaster area. “I just met with the Alausi authorities to offer them all the necessary resources,” the head of state wrote on Twitter.
He also said that the search and rescue operation will continue throughout the evening (Tuesday morning Greek time).
Authorities are working to restore water supply and provide temporary housing for the victims.
The landslide hit residential buildings on the evening of March 27. In total, there were 500 people in the disaster zone. The Red Cross estimated that 163 houses were destroyed or damaged.
