Uncontrolled pregnancy is one of the main reasons leading to complications. In the country, 30 out of 100 pregnant women do not visit a doctor during pregnancy. In the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital (SUUB) alone, 11% of patients who gave birth in the last five years had an unmonitored pregnancy. From year to year, the percentage is growing significantly, according to data from the Save the Children organization.

Worldwide, one woman dies every two minutes as a result of pregnancy or childbirth.

The latest statistics show that the maternal mortality rate in Romania has been steadily decreasing for the past 20 years, but according to the INS, there was a significant increase in maternal mortality in 2021 (28.2 per 100,000 live births) compared to 2020 (15.9 per 100 thousand births).

The indicator in 2021 is largely due to indirect causes of maternal mortality (19.4 per 100,000 live births), respectively, non-obstetric pathologies, but with an impact on the mother and pregnancy. This period corresponds to the peak period of the Covid 19 pandemic.

By definition, maternal death is the death of a woman during pregnancy or within 42 days of termination (regardless of the length or location of the pregnancy, from any cause caused by or aggravated by the pregnancy or the care she received that she requested) and after -abortion 30 days. An additional problem is caused by pregnant women who escaped from Ukraine and from a professional point of view belong to the category of high-risk pregnancies: the majority of patients, among more than 50 consulted at the SUUB integrated outpatient clinic and the obstetrics and gynecology clinic of the SUUB, they arrived in Romania without medical documents confirming normal course of pregnancy, and require complex consultations and tests.

Save the Children Romania draws attention to the need for access to medical services for all pregnant women and announces that a SUUB maternity unit with state-of-the-art medical equipment worth 178,500 euros is needed for the Obstetrics and Gynecology and Neonatology Sections. Among the medical equipment provided by Save the Children Romania is also a high-performance ultrasound, a test that can save the life of the mother and the fetus.

The purpose of ultrasound during pregnancy is to identify early complications, such as suspected ectopic pregnancy or the threat of spontaneous abortion, to identify risks associated with an unfavorable prognosis for the mother and the fetus. In addition to the importance of early diagnosis in pregnancy-specific therapeutic management, there are fetal malformations for which early neonatal intervention is life-saving.

Since 2010, Save the Children has equipped 107 medical units (neonatology, neonatal intensive care, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology wards) from all countries of the country with more than 1,200 vital equipment, having invested more than 8,700,000 euros.
