Optical fiber network in Cyclades completed

OUR development of fiber optic networks is of decisive importance not only for its strengthening broadband and providing high and ultra-high speeds Internet, but also for the construction of other types of infrastructure, such as data centers. In Greece, such investments include underwater and terrestrial infrastructure optical fibers, which sells in the Aegean and Ionian Seas Vodafone Greece. By the summer, the company is expected to complete the full laying of 670 km of submarine and 800 km of underground cable, which will pass through Cyclades (Syros, Tinos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros and Santorini) and will be connected to the Dodecanese (Kos and Rhodes) and Crete (Chania and Sitia). In the Dodecanese and Crete, the construction, laying and sealing of optical fiber has already been completed, allowing to connect the islands with mainland Greece. In the Cyclades and Corfu, only the sealing of the optical fiber, that is, the necessary work on the land side of the islands, will be completed by the first of June.

The project, which started in early 2022, is a €40 million investment, will enable very high speeds of up to 1 Gbps and is estimated to cover a population of 1 million people. The availability of fast internet in the Greek islands is one of the main conditions for attracting the resident population, as well as people from all over the world working remotely, digital nomads. This is also a prerequisite for the development of applications and digital projects, such as the national telemedicine network, which has a budget of 36 million euros and is included in the Recovery Fund.

According to the “Digital Transformation Bible”, which records the necessary interventions in the state’s technological infrastructure until 2025, with the exception of some large islands, most of the 107 inhabited islands of Greece, of which 51 with a population of more than 1,000 people, have low-capacity connections. . This is especially noticeable in summer, when speeds are very low.

“With 99% of data traffic internationally carried by submarine cables, this type of investment in technology is a key factor in the development and digitization of nations through uninterrupted access to high-quality Internet services. The imminent completion of the Aegean and Ionian terrestrial and subsea infrastructure development project is an extremely important event for the core of Vodafone’s green network,” said Nikos Pleuris, Network Director of Vodafone Greece.
