PSD leader Marcel Čolaku also reacted on Wednesday to the Hungarian Football Federation announcing that it has UEFA permission to use the historic symbol of “Greater Hungary” at national team matches. “There is no place for revisionist disappointment in sports,” says Cholaku.
- FRF and the first reaction after the symbol of “Greater Hungary” could be used at matches of Hungary
The PSD leader reacted with a message published on Facebook, in which he said that “football is not politics” and the president of the FRF, who is a member of the UEFA Executive Committee, should urgently demand that the decision be overturned.
- “Revisionist disappointment has no place in sports competitions. UEFA should immediately withdraw its consent to the Hungarian Football Association’s use of the Greater Hungary map on flags and banners.
- The President of the FRF, who is a member of the UEFA Executive Committee, must urgently request the reversal of this decision.
- I welcome the balanced position of CNCD President Csaba Astatos and hope that this model will be supported by both Hungary and UEFA. UEFA – Football is not politics!” – says Marcel Cholaku.
The Hungarian Football Union (MLSZ) has approved the introduction of national team banners depicting the map of historical Hungary at matches. According to a statement published on its website on Tuesday, the MLSZ requested a clear position from the European Union (UEFA) and its anti-discrimination group (FARE) on the issue of permission to place the historic symbol.
- “Regarding the permission to display the historical symbol, MLSZ requested a clear position from UEFA and FARE. Accepting MLSZ’s argument, the two organizations accepted that only the colors of Hungary’s historical map and the Árpád coat of arms did not constitute racist behavior, but that this did not apply to additional symbols and inscriptions placed on the flags, as well as chants by fans.
- As a result of the negotiations, the federation will allow banners to be placed in the stadium, which symbolize respect for historical Hungary and solidarity with fans from abroad,” says the press release, which mentions four necessary conditions: it can only present a map of historical Hungary, without any other symbol or inscription, only red, white and green colors can be on the flag, the symbol must be presented – in the usual way – due to content and fire prevention control, and the symbol in the stadium must not interfere with the fans watching the match in peace.
