Cavusoglu: Sweden has taken some positive steps, but not enough

“We have certain expectations from Sweden, some positive steps have been taken, but they are still not enough,” said Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu (according to English translation), when asked about the country’s accession to NATO at a press conference after the meeting donors. Conference for Turkey and Syria in Brussels.

Mr. Cavusoglu referred to the tripartite memorandum of cooperation signed between Turkey, Finland and Sweden, as well as to the established committee.

“We see that with the new government, Sweden is starting to make progress. He made an amendment to the anti-terrorism law, which is welcome, as well as an amendment to the Constitution, which we welcome,” the Turkish Foreign Minister said.

Kristerson: No wonder Finland joined NATO

It is not surprising that Finland will join NATO ahead of Sweden, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson said when answering a question at a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following a donor conference on Turkey and Syria in Brussels.

“We knew a few days earlier that there was a possibility that this would happen,” Mr. Kristerson noted (according to the English translation), adding that “Finland and Sweden wanted to join NATO together. We talked about this many times, but we also knew that each of the 30 NATO members had to make their own decisions. This did not come as a surprise. It was not our choice, but of course we respect Turkey when we make a decision.”

“Sweden is a safer country than before and we all think it’s good for the security of the region if Finland joins before Sweden joins. But we believe that we will join very soon,” said Ulf Kristersson.
