Russia, China and Iran have completed trilateral naval exercises in the Arabian Sea, which included artillery fire at sea and air targets, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

The drills near the Iranian port of Chabahar come as Russian President Vladimir Putin prepares to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Moscow for a three-day state visit starting on Monday.

Russia continues to hold military exercises with partners, especially China, despite pressure on its armed forces from the year-long war in Ukraine, where it has failed to make any significant progress since last summer.

The Russian frigate “Admiral Gorshkov” and the Chinese destroyer “Nankin” took part in the exercises held on Thursday and Friday, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported.

The Gorshkov ship, which is equipped with Russia’s most advanced Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles, also took part in joint naval exercises last month with China and South Africa.
