In the morning, members of environmental organizations and collectives went to the square of the Roman Agora for a new mobilization, where the cutting of trees is planned, according to a decision previously made by the administration of the municipality of Thessaloniki.
Responding to an online call, the protesters arrived at the scene and tried to interfere with the work of the repair shops of the Municipality of Thessaloniki. The police were called and proceeded to arrest 14 protesters. Among them, according to information, the head of the municipal faction “Environmental Solidarity” Michalis Tremopoulos.
These trees (41 poplars) are classified as hazardous by the municipality, so the decision was made to cut them down and replace them with double the number of trees, “healthier and more suitable for the terrain and climate of the city.”
Against the decision to cut down, groups of environmentalists appealed to the court of first instance of Thessaloniki with a request to “freeze” the work, but their request was rejected.
