There has been uproar over the BBC’s decision to suspend Gary Lineker from ‘Match of the Day’ after the veteran footballer’s comments about the UK government and its immigration policy.
Lineker, who has hosted refugees at his home in the past, retweeted Home Secretary Swella Braverman’s video of the proposed new law with the comment “Oh my God, this is more than awful.”
The 62-year-old former England captain recently compared the government’s “language” for asylum-seekers to that used in Germany in the 1930s, while other presenters withdrew from the BBC following Lineker’s departure.
“There is no big influx. We accept far fewer refugees than other major European countries. It’s just an incredibly harsh policy aimed at the most vulnerable people in a language similar to that used in Germany in the 30s, and I’m not okay? Lineker stressed in this regard.
The BBC felt that Lineker’s behavior had “violated media rules” and that “he should not get involved in partisan, political matters or political disputes”, so he ended the collaboration.
Jason Mohamed, presenter of BBC’s ‘Final Score’, also announced today that he is leaving his programme.
Host Kelly Somers, who has appeared on many BBC shows, tweeted today: “I confirm I will not be on BBC TV today.”
The British network is making what it claims is a “great effort” to resolve the issue with the presenters. On Saturday, the BBC was forced to suspend most of its sports broadcasts.
