“Yesterday the Athenians gave the slogan of Victory,” the Kathimerini reported on the front page of September 26, 1932, announcing the election victory of the People’s Party. The 1932 elections were held in a tense atmosphere due to political and economic developments.

This was preceded by the resignation of Prime Minister El. Venizelos on May 21, who vowed he would not return to the country unless steps were taken to strengthen the executive branch and curtail freedom of the press, and the country had filed for bankruptcy a few days earlier.

After the resignation of Venizelos, Al. took over the formation of the government. Papanastasiou, who soon retired.

On June 5, a new liberal government was formed with Venizelos as Prime Minister, and on August 19 Parliament was dissolved and elections were called for September 25, which were held under a simple proportional system.

“From the 9th night, when the first results began to come in, three officers were sent to pick them up from the Ministry of the Interior and take them to the house of Mr. Venizelos.

The officials of the Venezuelan side gathered there, and, having learned about them, they agreed which of the results should be made public,” Cathimerini writes in its report.

The next day, September 27, Georgios A. Vlachos, founder and publisher of Kathimerini, writes in the main article: “[…] We did not want the dispute over tomorrow’s elections to precede efforts to save the country at such a critical time.

We didn’t want to prepare the country for not being ruled by Analogy just because of bad planning. But something happened that I did not want. The analogy took place, bitter means and hardships preceded election days, chaos erupted, the military left the barracks, bad days are coming, a continuation of many others. According to them, what will become of the place?.. May the Almighty preserve it. Because we Greeks don’t seem to care…”

Ultimately, despite the victory of the People’s Party in the elections, no party gained autonomy, and the country plunged further into political instability.
