At a time when energy efficiency is one of the most important issues of concern to governments around the world, companies with know-how and a focus on innovation, such as the AVAX Group, manage to carry out projects that are not only a high degree of complexity, but at the same time make a significant contribution to achieving the goal of countries to become energy independent.
Among them is the power plant in Bismayah, Iraq, which was completed in 2022 and is characterized as the largest energy project ever carried out by a Greek company abroad. The total power of the station is 4650 MWof which 3150 MW (Phase 2: 1500 MW and Stage 3: 1650 MW) were installed by AVAX.
Project Identification and Schedule
In more detail, in 2022, AVAX Group completed and handed over to the implementing body weight Group holding in Bismayah, Baghdad, Iraq, for 3V stage of combined cycle power plant.

This phase of the project included the design, procurement, construction (EPC) and turnkey delivery of a 1,650 MW gas-fired combined cycle power plant. In total, it took 30 months from start to finish, a record time for a project of this magnitude.
Demonstration of experience and VRias from Ohmslime
The project was carried out under the supervision of the Department of Energy and Industrial Projects of the AVAX group. Detailed design (process and control) as well as most of the construction and specialized electromechanical studies of the project were successfully carried out by the company’s (in-house) Greek engineers.
The procurement and safe and timely transportation to Baghdad of all the necessary logistics equipment was also organized and carried out by AVAX, as well as the installation and construction work, as well as the necessary testing and commissioning of the station.
It is worth noting that at its peak, the project had more than 1300 employees of at least 20 different nationalities who worked together to achieve the goal in a multinational and complex environment and coped with its requirements with absolute success. Virtually all workers lived in a camp on the construction site, developed and managed by AVAX.
The largest energy project in Greece
BISMAYAH PHASE 3 is the largest energy project implemented by a Greek company abroad. The 1650 MW capacity is superior to any production station in Greece, and combined with the BISMAYAH PHASE 2 twin unit, which AVAX also successfully completed at the same station a few years ago, it makes a dynamic contribution to the full coverage of Iraq’s energy needs.
Tests
This project is another typical example of AVAX’s success despite the countless challenges it has faced. The largest of these relate to delivering a technologically advanced project in a dynamic environment such as Iraq, keeping the project on schedule in the midst of material repricing due to the global energy crisis, and creating and maintaining a global work climate.
In a specially designed area within the project boundaries, with appropriate security measures, in cooperation with international qualified and experienced security companies, the necessary technological infrastructure, health, sports and recreational areas, and respecting the diversity of all forms, administrative premises and living quarters for workers provided an ideal multicultural work environment in Iraq.
In addition, the company was called upon to deal with the unexpected challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic. The forced lockdown of the work site during the global lockdown in Iraq and the unprecedented conditions created in just a few weeks around the planet were one of the biggest challenges of the project.
AVAX, with the support of specialized healthcare institutions from Greece and other countries, managed to overcome the unprecedented dynamics and scale of the pandemic and successfully complete the project without any significant time delays. Installation of special units for disinfection, sanitary control of COVID-19, recovery and / or isolation in the living area of the working personnel, the possibility of vaccination within the construction site, the involvement of additional medical personnel solely for the needs of the construction site, the introduction of new hygiene protocols, accommodation and food, continuous communication and human staff support are some of the measures that contributed greatly to the smooth completion of the project.
He continues to be a star in his field
After completion and delivery of the project, the Group continues to implement key energy projects in Greece and abroad. It develops the knowledge and expertise of its employees in their respective fields, creating a special foundation for an industry struggling to survive and contributing to global energy recovery efforts. At the same time, it continues to follow global social and technological developments and needs and lead by implementing comprehensive projects that demonstrate the degree of know-how and excellent training of the units involved, clearly confirming that it is rightfully claiming all major infrastructure, construction and energy projects. .
