Bitdefender IT security specialists have discovered a cyber threat that copies the well-known ChatGPT platform in order to deceive potential investors. People are promised that they can earn thousands of dollars a month, but the goal is to get them to provide their card details after several steps.
The scam starts with a phishing email containing a dangerous link. After clicking on this link, the victim is redirected to a fake version of the ChatGPT platform, which presents attractive financial opportunities of up to $10,000 per month.
The fake version of the platform does not allow you to freely interact with the chatbot, so you can only choose predefined answers during the discussion. Instead, the official ChatGPT app can conduct written conversations and answer questions, and can write emails, essays, and more.
After a series of questions about current income, the fake ChatGPT asks you to confirm that the answers are from a real person by entering a valid email address and phone number. Shortly thereafter, the representative contacts the victim by phone to describe ways to make quick money through the cryptocurrency market, oil and international stocks with a minimum investment of €250. In addition, they ask about family members who have higher incomes, as well as the availability of savings accounts, Bitdefender explains.
The next step is to activate your WhatsApp account to start the investment process. Because Bitdefender’s research chose to skip this step, the cybercriminal emailed a payment form that asked for personal information, including date of birth and credit card details. These details can be used to steal personal and financial information.
The fake ChatGPT platform was accessible through a domain already included in the list of dangerous sites: hxxps://timegaea[.]com In addition, London-based Import Capital, which was represented by a call center operator, also appeared in a warning from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which said the firm was not authorized to do business in the UK.
Internet users should remain vigilant in the near future, given the scale that this method of deception is gaining worldwide. Links received in unsolicited emails, as well as investment opportunities offered on behalf of companies, are serious red flags.
Those who want to test the official ChatGPT app and its AI texting capabilities can only do so on the official website.
