
OUR Chaim Topolwidely known for his role as Tevye in the production (1967) and film production (1971) “Fiddler on the roof“, died at the age of 87 in Tel Aviv after battling Alzheimer’s disease.
The news of the death was confirmed by Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog, who said that Topol was “a charismatic actor who conquered many scenes in Israel and abroad, ‘filled’ the big screen of the cinema with his presence and, above all, ‘winned’ our hearts.”
In addition to Fiddler on the Roof, Topol starred in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only and the fantasy film Flash Gordon.
Norman Jewison’s Fiddler on the Roof had a budget of around $9 million and grossed $80 million in America. The play was nominated for eight Oscars, including Topol for Best Picture and Best Actor. He ultimately received statuettes for photography, sound and music.
In 1990-1991, Fiddler on the Roof was again presented on Broadway and won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Topol was nominated for Best Actor in a Musical.
Chaim Topol was born in Tel Aviv in 1935. The first films he was involved in were I Like Mike (1961), Eldorado (1963) and Sallah, which was also the first film that made him famous all over the world.
He worked again with the director of Salla, in the film Ervinka (1967), where he played the title character.
In 2015, Topol was awarded Israel’s highest award for his contribution to the arts.
