Strikes paralyze French refineries over pension reforms
French unions on Tuesday launched massive strikes across the country in a new effort to push against President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform plans.
Unions have vowed to bring the country to a standstill as they fight pension reforms that would raise the retirement age by two years and require more years of work to earn a full pension.
Police expect between 1.1 million and 1.4 million people to take to the streets in more than 260 locations on Tuesday, French news agency AFP said, citing an unnamed source.

The strikes are also expected to affect regional and high-speed trains, stopping four of the five in operation. Even more critically, refinery workers joined the strike, affecting fuel shipments across the country.
Protests against pension reform proposals have been recurring since the beginning of the year. The largest protest was attended by around 1.27 million people on 31 January.
