Chelsea can salvage their season with as long as possible a trip to the Champions League, but to do so they must reverse the result of the first leg of the round of 16 against Dortmund, who won 1-0 at home three weeks ago (Adeyemi 63).

Chelsea are 10th in the Premier League and have played three league games since the tour of Dortmund, losing two of them, 0-1 at home to Southampton and 0-2 away to Tottenham. and one win, most recently 1 – 0 at home to Leeds.

Graham Potter’s side won a group that also included AC Milan, Salzburg and Dinamo Zagreb (four wins, a draw and a loss) to reach the last 16 of the Champions League, although the kick-off was missed, defeat in Croatia and a draw at home to the Austrian champions (a moment which coincided with the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel).

Chelsea have two Champions League trophies to their credit, won in the 2011-2012 seasons (1-1 after 90 and 120 minutes, respectively, 4-3 on penalties in the final against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena) and 2020-2021. (1-0 in the last act with Manchester City, in Porto).

Dortmund are second in the Bundesliga, level on points with leaders Bayern Munich, and have won all 10 official matches played in 2023, eight in the league, one in the DFB-Pokal and one in the Champions League.

Edin Terzic’s side are also Europe’s top goalscorer this year with 23 after beating Leipzig 1-0 at home.

Dortmund are through to the last 16 of the Champions League after finishing second in a group won by Manchester City that also included Sevilla and Copenhagen with two wins, three draws and one loss.

Dortmund’s best performance in the Champions League was in the 1996-1997 season, winning the competition 3-1 in the final against Juventus in Munich (Schwarzgelben again reached the last act in 2012-13 when they lost 1- 2 Bayern Munich in London at Wembley).
