“Cash will disappear from Romania” was one of the conspiracies intensively circulated on social media by various populist “influencers” late last year in the context of the passing of several laws in favor of card payments through the Romanian parliament.

But in Western countries, payment by card is the norm. And in the Scandinavian countries, great steps have been taken to create a so-called “cashless society”, which was facilitated by a high level of digitization and education.

Where is Romania on this cashless road?

Living in such a society has its advantages and disadvantages, and we can see this from what everyday life looks like in countries where serious steps have already been taken in this direction.
